THERAPEUTIC FOSTER CARE: FOSTERING WITH WELLBEING IN MIND
Kasper’s therapeutic services provide support to improve the mental wellbeing of the children and foster carers within the agency and to support family stability. We work in a trauma-informed way, promoting attachment principles that develop a secure base for both carers and young people in their care. We prioritise relationships and stability within families that ultimately improve the outcomes for young people in our care.
Our Therapeutic Fostering Approach
We have practitioners specialising in various therapeutic approaches, including:
● Family and Systemic Psychotherapy
● Creative Arts Child Counsellor
● Therapeutic Life Story work
● and Non-Violence Resistance consultation/training
Specialist therapeutic intervention external to Kasper can be commissioned if needed as well.
Trust and Communication Within Therapeutic Fostering
When children in care join a foster family, they are joining a new system (family). Both the young person and the foster family can benefit from support to understand how they are going to build trust, communicate, and form strong relationships.
What Is Therapeutic Life Story Work?
Therapeutic Life Story Work is a creative and dynamic intervention used to effectively enable children and young people who have experienced childhood trauma, loss, and separation, to develop a coherent narrative about their life story in a collaborative way. Whereas traditional Life Work is often completed for a child and presented with little input from them, this therapeutic model is fully engaging for the child, their foster carer, and the Therapeutic Life Story worker throughout the process.
Utilising a wide variety of fun activities and resources creates an opportunity to safely explore their personal story and the wider history of their family, alongside their foster carer, building an even stronger understanding and appreciation of their relationship and reinforcing the child’s sense of belonging.
How Does Therapeutic Foster Care Help?
Child and adolescent counselling helps children and young people explore concerns that may be causing problems in their social, emotional, or cognitive development. The therapeutic process gives them the opportunity to express difficult or confused feelings in a safe environment with clear boundaries.
Play is a natural medium of communication for children, and the use of play and creative techniques within counselling facilitates the free expressions of feelings and emotions. It also helps children build resilience and improve their self-esteem.
