A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FOSTER CARER

Being a foster carer is an incredible journey filled with rewarding and challenging moments. Every day can be drastically different, and the most straightforward plans can become an adventure you won't forget! Below is a small glimpse into the day in the life of a foster carer during a trip to Margate, Kent.

Not A Holiday

Yesterday, we set off for our trip to the seaside. We cannot call it a holiday as holidays only count if you go abroad. Despite my "holiday" being downgraded to a "trip", we did have a lovely time on the car journey singing reggae songs together.

Exploring Margate

Our first destination was the Turner Contemporary Museum.  We stayed there for a whopping six and a half minutes before she became overwhelmed with boredom. Our next stop was the beach, but the crowds and the smell of the seaweed were proving to be a deterrent.

We went for a paddle, but when the water went over her ankles, she wanted to leave and couldn't believe families had come to the beach all day.

In Search Of Ice Cream

We went in search of ice cream. I found a beautiful restaurant called Olympus, but she would not go because it was named after a Greek god. We found another restaurant, but she refused to eat Mr Whippy's ice cream.

Back To Base

She refused to go to the Shell Grotto, the Margate caves or even the amusement arcade, so we trudged back to our Airbnb. The hills were too steep!

Despite the challenges, the evening promised a chance to revive the mood with a special dinner out. To my horror, the expensive meal went untouched - except for the cheesecake!

Reflections on Foster Care

The day ended with a mix of exhaustion and reflection. After ignoring me for most of the afternoon, she later complained that I don't take her out often enough! Foster care is full of these ironic moments, but they make the journey unique and rewarding.

Looking Ahead

Although the day didn't go as planned, I'm grateful for the opportunity to create these shared memories. Foster care teaches you patience, adaptability, and a sense of humour.
All crucial traits for any carer.
